Identifying your superpowers is crucial, especially in a business context. Leaning into your strengths—those things you excel at more than most—can transform how you approach challenges, meet goals, and make a lasting impact. Research consistently shows that when we focus on our strengths rather than trying to fix our weaknesses, we are far more effective. It’s often a waste of energy to focus only on what’s “broken.” Instead, identify your strengths and learn how to use them productively to fulfill your purpose, achieve your goals, and bring others along on the journey.
While it’s essential to address weaknesses so they don’t become obstacles, the real key is to double down on your strengths and leverage your natural talents.

How do you identify your superpowers?

There are various character strength tests available, but I find that they’re not always the most practical and a life coach can be a better source to direct you. From my personal experience, here are a few steps that helped me discover my strengths:

  1. Reflecting on life experiences: Think about the moments in your life when you felt the most excited, engaged, and fulfilled. These “peak experiences” often reveal your true superpowers. Go back as far as you can, even to your childhood, to uncover patterns if needed.
  2. Consider how you entered your career: What led you to your current line of work? What specific skills or qualities do you use to make an impact?
  3. Do more of what energizes you: Identify the activities or projects that light you up and make you want to keep going. These are often tied to your strengths. I phrase that I really like is “Do more of what makes you want to do more” . Ask yourself where you were the happiest?

As I reflect on my own superpowers, a few key strengths stand out—ones that have shaped both my career and personal growth:

  • Connecting people, teams, and ideas: One of my superpowers is building bridges between people and ideas, fostering collaboration and creativity.
Over the years, I’ve honed this skill by observing the subtle dynamics within teams and between individuals, deeply listen and understand the needs, motivations, and potential of those around me. By paying close attention to what people say, and just as importantly, what they don’t say, I’ve been able to spot connections that might otherwise be overlooked. It’s through this active listening that I’ve developed the ability to see where collaboration can happen and how diverse perspectives can come together to create something powerful. It’s not just about knowing who to connect, but understanding the underlying synergies that can drive real impact.
While at that moment, I seemed a “passive actor” at dinner table or events, now I realized how crucial these opportunities have been to develop such a “connecting the dots” superpower.
  • Curiosity and cultural exploration: Since I was young, I’ve had an insatiable curiosity about the world. This curiosity has driven me to immerse myself in different cultures and environments, not just as a passive observer, but with the intent to understand, absorb, and learn from diverse perspectives. Whether I’m in a boardroom or in a new city, this desire to explore has become a core part of who I am. It allows me to adapt to new situations and environments with ease, without ever feeling confined to one particular role or identity. I believe this openness to the world helps me see opportunities where others might not. Since childhood, I’ve always felt there was a bigger world beyond my immediate surroundings. I had the spontaneous impression that, while my friends were focused on local events, I was more interested in exploring the unknown, which helped shape my perspective today.

Level up your leadership skills

It’s not just about knowing your strengths—it’s about using them to elevate your leadership, stay true to your values, and inspire others. Our inner stories have a profound impact on our success and failure. How we frame these stories shapes our identity and our actions.

We all have a mission we want to accomplish, but challenges and obstacles make the journey exciting. The stories we tell ourselves influence our ability to overcome these challenges. Our brain is wired to see and interpret stories, whether they are true or not. The more we focus on these stories, the more they shape our identity, actions, and interactions.

Overcoming imposter syndrome

Imposter syndrome is a common challenge, but instead of letting it hold you back, embrace it in a functional way. Sometimes, that feeling of not being enough can push us to work harder, learn something new, and ultimately improve. The problem arises when we let it consume us.

Ask yourself: How is this feeling serving me?

Use imposter syndrome as a motivator, but don’t let it stop you from moving forward.
